二十世纪初兴起的中文唱片业，随着电台广播、电视走入千家万户，开启了影视和流行音乐蓬勃发展的时代。新加坡人除了听港台歌星的歌曲之外，也在听潘秀琼、秦淮、黄清元、吴刚等生长于斯的歌手。他们对歌曲的演绎，吸引了万千知音，为年轻国家发挥了凝聚人心的作用，也成为建国一代人的集体回忆。

Poon Sow Keng is a well-known international superstar. Her original song "Lover's Tears" has been covered by many singers. She was hailed as one of the top five singers in the 1950s. She was recruited by EMI Records and became the only Singaporean singer signed then. Poon later served as a singing instructor at the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation, cultivating talents in the local singing circle.

In 1969, he moved to Hong Kong and had a foothold overseas. Chin was also keen to partake in charity singing in those days. After fading out limelight, Chin has devoted to writing and published dozen of books.
